Microsuction What is Microscution? How do we do it? What are the benefits of Mirosuction? What is Microsuction? How do we do it?Benefits to Microsuction Ear microsuction is the removal of ear wax using a high powered microscope and a small, very thin, steel wand type fitting attached to a suction pipe. During microsuction, a suction device gently removes wax from the ear canal. The procedure can be used against most ear wax but very dry wax will still need to be softened beforehand. Our technique includes using a microscope that our suction tube fits through. This allows us to see deep into the ear as we are removing the wax. Unlike ear syringing or ear irrigation, where ear wax is flushed out blindly, microsuction allows the ear wax to be directly viewed under the microscope whilst it is being removed. This makes the procedure much quicker, safer and comfortable. Microsuction does not always need the use of softening drops for wax (e.g. olive oil or sodium bicarbonate ear drops) for several days or weeks beforehand. Nonetheless, the use of ear drops is still recommended where ever possible for one or two days prior to having microsuction performed. During microsuction, no water is being flushed into the ear canal. Microsuction is performed ‘dry’, which significantly reduces the risk of infection and accidentally pushing ear wax deeper into the ear canal. Unlike ear syringing and ear irrigation, microsuction can be performed in people who have a perforated eardrum or grommet, mastoid cavity and cleft palate. Microsuction can be used to remove a foreign object (e.g. children’s marble) that may be lodged inside the ear canal.
